Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast…
Hebrews 6:19
More than once our family has hired a houseboat on the Clyde River. Stopping the boat’s engines leaves the boat at the mercy of the current. Without lowering the anchor, the boat may rapidly pick up speed, drifting toward the land. It is essential to put the anchor down in order to stay safe and secure.
Similarly, God has provided an Anchor for our souls. It does the same thing for our souls as an anchor does for a ship.
Earlier in this chapter the Spirit of God taught that He wants us to enjoy ‘full assurance of hope,’ and our hope is the Lord Jesus Himself. Here we learn that being secure in my relationship with the Saviour anchors my soul, securing it during the storms of life. In Christ I’m ‘fastened to the Rock which cannot move, grounded firm and deep in the Saviour’s love.’
Our hope is not found in a politician, a spouse, a child or an employer. No doubt you know people who look to one or more of these to anchor their souls. People may hold out promises, but they cannot last long.
The hope of the world is the everlasting Lord Jesus Christ.
According to Hebrews 7:19, keeping God’s rules will not complete us or bring us closer to God. The Lord Jesus is the ‘better hope’ by Whom we come close to the Heavenly Father.
Is Your Soul Anchored? Are you firmly in His grip, secure in His strength?
Father, in a world of stormy uncertainties, thank You for anchoring me in Jesus Christ. I bask in Your steadiness and cling to Your faithfulness. Keep my focus off people and on to Christ, the better hope. I ask this in the Name of the Lord Jesus, Amen.
