Not So, My Lord

By Kevin Harris, pastor of the Illawarra Community Baptist Church in Dapto, NSW

And Lot said unto them, Oh, not so, my Lord.

Genesis 19:18

Lot has been on a downward slide for some time. He’s already foolishly integrated his family into wicked Sodom, offered his daughters to sexual deviants, and lingered when he should have been fleeing the city. He’s faced the death of any idea that he was influencing the Sodomites when they furiously reject him as judgmental. Even his sons thought he was joking when he warned them to flee God’s wrath.

Now his backsliding has reached a point where he says ‘No’ to God Almighty.

After waiting and waiting for Lot to voluntarily leave Sodom, his merciful God has had to seize this man and his wife and two daughters and drag them out of Sodom so that He can destroy it. He issues a command in verse 17: ‘Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed.’

Yet Lot has a better idea.  He’d rather move to Zoar.

How incongruous it is to call Him ‘Lord’ while telling Him no!

Father, help me to submit to Your orders.  I know my ideas will never be better than Yours. Help me to willingly and cheerfully follow Your leading in my life. I ask this in the precious Name of the Lord Jesus, Amen.
